Dear friends!
For those of you coming from abroad and arriving
in the morning or early afternoon on Saturday,
you are most welcome to join us for lunch
and a tour of Tongeren.
Meeting point:
Along with Arlon and Tournai, Tongeren is one of the three oldest cities in Belgium. The oldest archaeological remains discovered in Tongeren date back to 30 BC. Tongeren owes its origins to a camp set up by Julius Caesar's lieutenants Sabinus and Cotta, whose legions were massacred nearby (in the Geer valley around the present-day village of Bassenge) at the Battle of Aduatuca by Ambiorix, leader of the Eburons, who united part of Belgian Gaul against Caesar's armies in 54 BC. Various historians believe that prior to the Roman occupation, the region and the town were actually occupied by the Eburon tribe of Gauls, whose most famous leader was Ambiorix, who opposed Caesar and narrowly escaped.
